Theoretically, aerobic cellular respiration should produce
38 ATP molecules. However, some of the hydrogen atoms in the intermembrane
compartment diffuse through the inner mitochondrial membrane, reducing the
amount of free energy in the electrochemical gradient, therefore reducing the
amount of ATP that could be potentially produced.
